How to Check your Meter for Leaks

Fixing leaks is an essential part of conserving water

Common locations to find your meter include basements and utility rooms. Your meter type may be analog or e-coder (digital). Below are images you can use to identify yours:

Analog

E-Coder (digital)

Next, verify that no water is currently in use.

Analog:

Observe the small red triangle (between numbers 7 and 8 in the image above). If spinning water is passing through the meter, you have a leak.

E-Coder (digital):

Shine a light on the small opening (circled in red in the image above). The LED reading will appear, if numbers are increasing, you have a leak.

Toilet Tablet (available at Westford Water Department)

Place a toilet tablet in the tank. Wait for 15 minutes and look for a color change within the bowl.  If you see color, the toilet is leaking.
