    Westford Water Conservation

    Landscaping

You CAN conserve water while also maintaining a healthy lawn! Amazing right?

Finding the right contractor for you is essential! Here is a helpful resource:

    Let's Talk Evapotranspiration!

    What is it?

The amount of water lost due to transpiration (exhalation of water from parts of plants exposed to the atmosphere) and evaporation (vaporization of water)

    When should you irrigate?

    • When evapotranspiration rates are low (morning and evening)

    • Avoid irrigation during times of stronger sunlight, wind, and low humidity

    • Saves YOU money and water!

    Reducing Waste

    Uniform distribution of water

Irrigate during calm periods (early morning)

    Repair irrigation system leaks

Make sure your irrigation system avoids watering unnecessary places (ex.driveways)

    • Water deeply to recharge the plant available soil moisture pool

    • Want soil wet to the maximum rooting depth

    • Allow for mild drought stress to promote deeper rooting and drought resistance

    • Over-watering inhibits rooting, decreases drought resistance, promotes disease and soil compaction

    Watering more

    Less often

    When Irrigating...

Have an irrigation system fitted with multiple cycling

    Short repeated cycles

    Reduce runoff (stormwater) and waste

Do your best to prevent erosion

    Additions to Your System

    • ET Sensors (sophisticated)

    • Moisture or precipitation sensor

    • Programmable irrigation controller

A controller linked to a computer that collects data from a weather station such as wind speed, temperature, relative humidity

Makes adjustments to irrigation based on ET conditions - improves irrigation efficiency
